The product
An inkjet pen for graphic artists, developed for Zebra of Japan

TTP’s role

TTP was asked to develop a pen which could generate a range of line thicknesses and patterns using inkjet technology. The pen was aimed at graphics professionals and had to be compact and simple to use.

TTP provided a range of capabilities in printing, electronics, ASIC design and consumer product manufacturing that were outside the capabilities of Zebra, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of traditional ink and gel pens.

The pen is innovative on a number of levels and has been patented to protect Zebra’s investment. The printhead itself is based upon Hewlett Packard’s first generation inkjet print cartridge but uses a custom ink reservoir and interconnect system developed by TTP to fit the form factor of the pen.

The pen is controlled by a TTP-designed ASIC mounted on flexible circuit and wrapped around a rechargeable battery pack. This architecture allows a remarkably compact product.
