First consumer electrochemical gas detector

TTP and SF Detection developed the world’s first consumer electrochemical gas detector in just nine months.

Designed to monitor for deadly carbon monoxide, the detector had to meet stringent regulatory standards to attain US and European safety approvals. As a product which saves lives, it needed to have the highest levels of reliability and to operate for almost the expected product life without changing the battery.

Meeting a tough nine-month development target, we designed a low-power electronics architecture that gave the detector a five-year battery life. The development’s costs of goods target was equally demanding, however we met this by our novel use of components and our manufacturing approach.

The gas detector is a very high-volume product with over one million units manufactured per year. Combined with tough cost requirements, this made it ideally suited to manufacture in China. 

TTP used long-term links to China to select manufacturing partners capable of meeting the regulatory standards and to set up a reliable supply chain network.
