TTP collaborated with Viasat Government to develop the Enhanced LAISR Communications on the Move (COTM) terminal, a compact, low-profile satellite terminal designed to provide high-speed, reliable connectivity for land and maritime vehicles in motion. This terminal supports various applications, including full-motion video transmission, data transfer, and Command & Control (C2) communications.
Context
Modern military and governmental operations require robust, high-speed communication capabilities for both crewed and uncrewed platforms operating in diverse and often challenging environments. Additionally, communication solutions have to be able to integrate effectively with existing systems.
Solution
Viasat partnered with TTP to develop a compact terminal that incorporates advanced technologies to meet these stringent requirements, including connectivity at speeds up to 3 Mbps in full-duplex mode, easy integration onto varied platforms, auto-pointing and robust performance in harsh environments with IP68 rating compliance.
Result
A collaborative development led to the successful creation of the Enhanced LAISR COTM terminal, which supports critical missions by offering mobile platforms constant, high-speed communication links. The Enhanced LAISR COTM terminal represents a significant advancement in mobile satcoms, delivering resilient and high-speed connectivity for defence and governmental operations across diverse and demanding environments.

Recognising the critical need for reliable, high-speed satellite communications for mobile land and maritime platforms, we partnered with TTP to develop the LAISR Communications on the Move (COTM) terminal. TTP's expertise in systems engineering and their commitment to delivering low Size,Weight, and Power (SWaP) solutions were instrumental in creating a terminal that meets the rigorous demands of our government clients. This collaboration has resulted in a resilient and high-performing terminal, enhancing our ability to provide dependable connectivity for various defence applications.

How TTP helped
The TTP team provided programme management, overseeing each phase of the project to ensure alignment with Viasat's objectives. They conducted detailed systems, mechanical, and thermal design to ensure the terminal met IP68 rating and environmental requirements, guaranteeing durability in harsh conditions. TTP also designed a customised BGANRadio Module (BRM) carrier board, GPS antenna and LNA board, and interconnecting cables, tailoring these elements to the specific requirements of the COTM application. Additionally, TTP managed the formal BGAN type approval process (excluding antenna tests) and conducted formal verification testing to validate the terminal's performance. They supported integration testing, facilitated the transfer to a third-party manufacturer by designing and delivering the production test system, and provided ongoing production support to maintain quality and performance consistency.
Collaborative development of mission critical solutions
The successful development of theEnhanced LAISR COTM terminal was a collaborative effort. In addition to Viasat Government Services writing the CPU software and leading the integration and on-air testing, Cobham supplied the IGA4000 electronically steered antenna and measuring the impact of the COTM caseworks on its performance, optimising its beam pointing and providing data for BGAN type approval. Rugged Logic contributed by updating their antenna steering PCB to suit the COTM application, including form factor adjustments and removal of unnecessary circuitry, aligning with the terminal's design requirements.
