Context

Carbometrics has developed proprietary biomimetic Glucose Binding Molecules (GBM) and want to exploit this technology to create innovative new glucose sensors that will enable market-leading Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) sensors.

Solution

Combining Carbometrics’ proficiency in the design and synthesis of highly selective and robust binding molecules with TTP’s expertise in electrochemistry, sensor transduction technologies, and measurement techniques, a range of sensing solutions were developed.

Result

Carbometrics was able to characterise the behaviour of their GBMs across a variety of sensor implementations, gaining an understanding of the technical viability of each solution, as well as the specific development challenges required to transfer it to manufacture.

B

Blood glucose monitors are the most valuable type of commercialised biosensor. Reliable glucose measurement is key to managing diabetes and guiding treatment, with clinical evidence for the efficacy of continuous monitoring in decreasing dangerous hypoglycaemic episodes by improving glycaemic control.

There continue to be issues with sensor accuracy, reliability, and cost. Carbometrics aims to address these unmet needs using their GBMs, offering unparalleled selectivity even in the most complex biological mixtures, long-term robustness measured in years, and using a scalable platform that can enable low cost-per-day solutions.

Carbometrics worked with TTP to understand how their unique ability to design, synthesise and derive highly selective and robust small molecule receptors could be leveraged to develop an accurate glucose sensing platform and create market-leading Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) sensors.

Carbometrics Intext

Using Carbometrics’ elegant, innovative chemistry, TTP produced a population of different specifically functionalised prototype sensing membranes in order to record, analyse, and characterise their behaviours across a biologically valid range of measurement conditions.

This data supported modelling of the physical and chemical behaviour of the system, and the prediction of their sensing performance using a variety of transduction technologies and detection techniques, gaining an understanding of the technical viability of each solution, and looking at the development effort that would be required to take each implementation to market.

Carbometrics is working to help people with diabetes to live longer, more normal lives. Developing sensing solutions that use long-lived, stable GBM’s combined with well understood measurement techniques will enable diabetics not sufficiently served by existing products to achieve desired outcomes in managing their condition.
