Case study

Developing a new ASIC for next-generation neural implants

Microdul

To realise a new class of miniaturised neuromodulation implants, Microdul partnered with TTP to co-develop a custom ASIC, combining deep neurotech insight with silicon design expertise to accelerate development, reduce risk, and enable future-ready therapies.

Context

Microdul wanted to develop a compact, power-efficient ASIC to enable the next generation of neuromodulation implants, but defining the product architecture and meeting performance goals in a high-risk domain required specialist insight.

Solution

TTP’s Neurotech team, combining market knowledge and engineering depth, partnered with Microdul, experts in building next-gen neural implant silicon, to specify a new ASIC for the next generation of neurotherapies, enabling miniaturised implants with higher power efficiency and optimised performance.

Result

This collaboration shows how TTP helps partners navigate complex neurotech development: defining, de-risking, and accelerating custom components that enable transformative therapies and future innovation.

Microdul set out to develop a specialised ASIC to power the next generation of neuromodulation implants. The ambition was to support advanced stimulation in a compact, power-efficient chip suitable for implantable use. However, designing silicon that could meet these exacting requirements posed significant challenges. The neurotech domain is technically demanding and commercially challenging, with strict clinical and regulatory requirements, evolving standards of care, and uncertain reimbursement pathways that can complicate the route to market. Microdul needed to define a commercially viable product architecture and specification before committing to full development, a task that required deep domain expertise across multiple disciplines.

Co-developing the NeuroASIC

TTP partnered with Microdul early in the development process to help define and refine the ASIC architecture. Drawing on our experience in neurostimulation systems and implantable medical devices, we collaborated closely with their engineering team to develop a robust functional specification. This included defining a robust stimulation architecture, supporting multichannel operation, and ensuring efficient internal power management.

Our multidisciplinary team brought both technical depth and a practical understanding of how the ASIC would be used in a clinical context. By combining this with Microdul’s expertise in analogue and mixed-signal IC design, we co-developed a design that meets the performance needs of next-generation neurotherapies while supporting future scalability and integration.

A collaborative approach to accelerate medical device development

This collaboration with Microdul on the NeuroASIC exemplifies how TTP accelerates neurotechnology innovation through integrated and innovative solutions.

For companies looking to develop custom devices in unfamiliar or highly specialised domains, TTP combines deep market expertise with an agile development approach to deliver success. By engaging TTP early to define the right requirements and system-level architecture, organisations can reduce technical risk, avoid costly rework, and make faster, more confident progress toward clinical and commercial goals. TTP supports partners in navigating this early-stage complexity, bringing together multidisciplinary expertise to accelerate product definition and set a strong foundation for development. We are committed to advancing medical device innovation to help our partners bring transformative therapies to market with confidence.
